From Career Uncertainty to a New Beginning: Sanket’s Journey as a Personal Support Worker

Starting a new career is not always part of the original plan. Sometimes, it begins with uncertainty, a conversation, and the courage to try something different.

That is exactly how Sanket’s journey into healthcare began.

After struggling to find employment in his previous profession, Sanket started looking for a stable and meaningful career. He had not originally planned to become a Personal Support Worker. However, after speaking with a course advisor and learning more about the PSW profession, the responsibilities involved, and the growing opportunities in healthcare, he decided to enrol in the NACC Personal Support Worker 2022 Program at Prime International College of Health Care and Technology.

Taking the First Step Without a Healthcare Background

At the beginning of the program, Sanket felt nervous because he did not have a healthcare background. He was unsure whether he would be able to understand the course material and perform the practical skills required in the field.

With the support of his instructor, Jasvir Kaur, he quickly became more comfortable and confident. Sanket describes her as kind, patient, supportive, and encouraging.

Her clear and practical teaching style helped him understand the course material easily. Through class discussions, presentations, activities, and practical demonstrations, Sanket gradually developed the confidence and knowledge required to succeed.

Building Practical Skills for the Workplace

Throughout the program, Sanket developed the skills needed to work safely and professionally as a Personal Support Worker.

He learned how to assist clients with activities of daily living, personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, mobility, and meal support. He also learned safe transfer techniques, positioning, infection prevention, communication, documentation, and how to observe and report changes in a client’s condition.

Turning Classroom Learning into Real Experience

Sanket completed his placement at Wellington House Nursing Home in Prescott, Ontario.

His placement gave him the opportunity to apply his classroom learning in a real long-term care environment. He worked alongside healthcare professionals and supported residents with personal care, mobility, meals, comfort, communication, and daily routines.

This hands-on experience helped him become more confident, responsible, and independent. It also taught him the importance of teamwork, punctuality, professionalism, and accountability.

When Hard Work Leads to Opportunity

Sanket took his placement seriously. He arrived on time, followed instructions, accepted feedback, worked respectfully with the healthcare team, and treated every resident with dignity and compassion.

His dedication and professionalism did not go unnoticed.

After completing his placement, Sanket was offered employment at Wellington House Nursing Home, the same facility where he completed his practical training.

For Sanket, this was more than a job offer. It was proof that his hard work, commitment, and willingness to learn had been recognized.

Successfully Completing the NACC Examination

Sanket also successfully passed the NACC final examination, completing an important step in becoming a certified Personal Support Worker.

Passing the examination gave him confidence and confirmed that he had developed the knowledge and practical understanding required to begin his career in healthcare.

Although he did not have a healthcare background and had not originally planned to become a PSW, the right guidance, training, and practical experience helped him build a stable and meaningful career.
